Brookhaven Bike Path Painting
A new plan by the city council passed and has been implemented for sidewalks on all new and newly improved residential streets beginning August 25, 2017. Many residents have complained about the difficulty in traffic directing itself as our population increases and the numbers of the cars on the road explodes. It also requires bike lanes to be painted on all existing roadways to allow for those who wish to commute via bicycle the opportunity to fully make it to work on a bike path.
The council two years ago places a high priority on making alternative transportation options available and highlights those that promote a healthy lifestyle. Biking is one of them but often difficult since the paths are not clear. Painting lines specifying areas for bikers will make it clear to traffic that their lines are not to be violated. Three feet of space is typically given to the bike lanes. Caution must not be exercised as many roadways had their vehicle lanes reduced to accommodate this new initiative.
Frontage roads are of special concern because typically speed limits are higher. We want to emphasize the caution that must be used in these areas as now there are three feet of bike paths and their lanes painted on both sides of the roadway for a total of six feet dedicated to bikers.
The new ordinance also requires new sidewalks to be made of concrete and to be five feet in width. Sidewalks may not be constructed unless a permit is obtained from the city building inspector and permitted appropriately. The city council will continue to monitor biker and pedestrian safety with the implementation of the new ordinance and encourage residents to voice concerns regarding areas that are dangerous or warrant further inspection by the city.
There are a variety of short and long term projects underway as it is expected to take over 5 years to implement this plan and currently, 30 improvement areas are underway. Areas of high traffic will be the first to be revamp with new street lanes painted on roadways where a density factor is determined to warrant immediate attention. The busiest streets are the areas we want to designate bike lane paths first to reduce accidents and promote the highest use of new roadways line painting to help the traffic move faster.
We are pleased this new initiative passed and look forward to continue review and citizen input as we continue road improvements in Brookhaven.
