Soft Grays in Kitchen Remodel
A recent kitchen remodel in a Brookhaven home gives a new look and new light to this tired old kitchen. The original kitchen built with the home in 1960 was closed off from the family and living room area immediately adjacent to the kitchen with also contains an entryway from the garage. The homeowners decided they wanted everything ripped out so the walls were removed and the ceiling lifted and new windows placed on the west side of the home to bring in lots of light and beautiful sunsets in the evening. The original wood flooring, was worn but most importantly, made of thin planks that were regularly cracking and had thin boards on an unstable subfloor. A civil engineer was brought in to stablize the home by adding 6 foot concrete footers to two ends of the back of the home. With this new stability the homeowners were more confident to raise the ceilings, which they had wanted originally but worried about the impact such cutting and refitting would have on what they knew was already an unstable floor. With the footings in place, beautiful new honey oak hardwood floors were installed. The ceilings were raised using a crane mechanism from a local roofing company who handled the job. The homeowners already had light colors in their kitchen but felt it was still dark. The large windows enables by the higher ceilings brought in the light they were looking for in this west facing kitchen which does not get any morning or daytime sun.
A custom made island was installed of light pine. This 10 foot island gave the prep space the owners wanted. To achieve the bright and light kitchen they always wanted, soft white and subtle grays were used on the walls and cabinetry. Sand gray is the primary paint color for the cabinets with a few accents in pearl gray and soft white. Soft white paint is also used on the walls and trim. Clear glass on a few accent cabinet doors. The sink is a winter white marble farm sink that rests against gray and white subway tile. These subtle shade differences in color give depth and warm to this light and bright kitchen.
